Story

What broke me

This painting is part of a triptych I created to process a breakup and what happened afterwards.

I chose to end our relationship, even though I still loved him. That hurt deeply. I was grateful that we could remain friends, because he was also my best friend.

During that same period, two other things happened in my life that affected me deeply. When our friendship eventually ended too, something inside me broke.

I felt reduced to ashes. It marked the beginning of my crash.

White as a beginning

The dominant colour in this work is close to white. Almost everything is light and bright.

After what had reduced me to ashes, I wanted to make room for light again.

Sparkling points of light

Tiny points of light sparkle in her eyes. Their shape is based on a ring my ex and I bought together on a trip. A small reminder of what once was.

To me, that sparkle also represents something else: a sign that there is still life in you. Even after a deep low, it can become visible again. Somewhere deep inside, it remains.

Her eyes are different colours, as is her eyeshadow. At first, I gave her two blue eyes, but that made her too gentle, almost angelic. Two pink or purple eyes, on the other hand, took her too far from being human.

Only when her eyes were different did she feel completely right to me.

She carries both the experience and the light within her.

The slow rise

This work tells of falling, burning out and still rising again. Not in one sweeping movement, but by slowly returning from something that had completely knocked me down.

The phoenix represents the strength to want to live again, even from the ashes. To me, Rising Phoenix is about daring to rise again, leaving behind what hurt and eventually flying even higher than where you left off.

I would like to rise from the ashes more quickly. But it seems I need to respect my own pace.
